Live/Radar
Live radar
Over Ray, North Dakota, where the map opens. The whole country
Radar across the United States, live: the echo and the storms’ tops every five minutes, the rain falling now, and the rain of the last hour to three days in motion. Below them, the storm analysis: hail and its track, rotation and its track, what is falling, the gauged hour and the radars’ view; the forecast maps: seven days of temperature, wind, rain, snow, sky and thunder; and the sea maps: the waves, the swell and their period off every coast. Each picture opens on its own page, its own map.
The rings are the storms the radars detect, the larger ring a severe one; each line runs to where its storm will be in an hour if it keeps its present speed and heading. Rotation and hail are what the radars detect and the analysis measures, not warnings: the official watches and warnings in force are drawn on the map in their own colours and set out in full under Alerts.

Storm analysis
Every radar in the country joined into one analysis and measured: the echo nearest the ground, the largest hail and its track, how high a storm’s hail core reaches, the turning of the wind near the ground and its track, what is falling, the last hour’s rain checked by the gauges, and how well the radars see each place. The lower 48, every ten minutes.

How the pictures are made
Every radar in the national network, more than 150 of them, sweeps the sky every few minutes, tilting up through a set of angles. The sweeps are joined into one picture of the country on a grid about a third of a mile across, each place taking the lowest beam that sees it clearly. Each picture is checked against the national analysis before it is drawn, and echo it does not confirm (birds, insects, ground clutter, the beam bent back to the ground) is left out. From the same sweeps, the rain falling now and the rain that has fallen are worked out. Storm Station draws each picture in its own colours, in the browser, at every zoom, so the map stays sharp as it is enlarged.
The storm analysis joins every radar in the national network every two minutes into one picture of the country on a grid about two thirds of a mile across, cleaned of ground clutter, birds and insects, and measures from it what no single radar shows: the largest hail, the turning of the wind, how high a storm’s heavy echo reaches above the freezing level, and what is falling, read with the temperature of the air. Storm Station keeps it every ten minutes for a day, the gauged rain and the radars’ view each hour, and draws it at every zoom from the analysis’s own grid.
The forecast maps are drawn from the national blend of the forecast models: the models joined into one forecast and corrected against what each place has measured, on a grid 1.6 miles across, the forecast the country’s forecasters start from. Each of its main runs, four a day, is read whole, laid onto the same grid of latitude and longitude as the radar at 2.8 miles a cell, and played forward from now.
The sea maps are drawn from the weather service’s wave model: the waves the wind raises over every ocean, worked out from the wind forecast, on fine grids along the coasts of the United States (a point about every 11 miles) and a coarser one over the open ocean (about every 17 miles). Each of its runs, four a day, is read whole, laid onto the same grid of latitude and longitude as the radar at 2.8 miles a cell, the finest grid first where they meet, and played forward from the hour it starts.
Each of the weather service’s radars on its own, its pictures at four tilts from its lowest up, and the storms it tracks: every radar.
